Mercedes sets a record for selling the most expensive car in the world $ 142 million

Mercedes confirmed recently that it has just sold the most expensive car in the world. It was a very rare 1955 Mercedes-Benz SLR Coupe that was once part of the German automaker’s collection that was sold for $142 million. That price tag makes it the most expensive car ever sold, according to Hagerty, a company that tracks the value of collectors’ cars.

Proceeds from the car sales will be used to establish the Mercedes-Benz Foundation, a global scholarship fund for the education and research in the fields of environmental science and decarbonisation for young people. The previous record sale price belonged to a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO for $70 million.

The Mercedes for sale was one of two prototype 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupes (with a top speed of 299 km/h), cars named after Mercedes chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut at the time. The car is designed as a road version of the grand prix W 196 R.

The auction for the right to own the car is a closed event, with only invited guests able to attend at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart on May 5. The auction was held in partnership with auto auction company RM Sotheby’s. After one vehicle is sold, the other will remain in the museum’s collection, according to a statement from Mercedes-Benz.

Brian Rabold, Hagerty’s Vice President of Automotive, said: “Their 1930s-1950s race cars are rare and most are still factory owned, so whatever hits the market. The school is very welcoming.”

The sale made the car one of the 10 most expensive items ever auctioned. Simon Kidston, the winner of the bid representing the unnamed buyer, said: “If you were to ask classic car experts and top collectors of the past half-century about the most desirable car in the world, , then they will most likely come up with the same model: the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR It’s a combination of engineering, track history, the power of the three-pointed star on the nose and the fact that it never been sold. Many collectors tried to buy, all failed.”

Marcus Breitschwerdt, Head of Heritage Mercedes-Benz, stated that the car will remain in public view. “The buyer has agreed that the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe will remain on public display for special occasions,” he said.
