Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, May 23, signed a law authorizing the confiscation of assets of citizens accused of supporting Russia in the ongoing conflict.

The act passed by parliament in mid-May states that property confiscation is an unusual measure that can only be used during martial law and is based on a court ruling. On May 22, Ukraine extended martial law by 90 days, until August 23.

“The procedure of monitoring and confiscating the assets of sanctioned persons, who in one way or another support Russia against Ukraine, will allow us to quickly and efficiently replenish Ukraine’s state budget.” , Mr. Zelensky said .

Actions that could lead to the confiscation of assets from companies and individuals include harming the national security and sovereignty of Ukraine, equating Ukrainian patriotism with Nazism and incitement hatred for the Ukrainian people, their culture and language.

In April, the Ukrainian Parliament passed a law allowing the nationalization of assets of Russian citizens or people with close ties to Moscow, who publicly deny that a war is taking place. Russia officially describes the conflict in Ukraine as a “special military operation”.
