Israel discovered the mechanism of genetic mutations that cause autism

This is the result of research by scientists from Israel’s Tel Aviv University. The study results were published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry earlier this May.

The team discovered that variants of the ADNP and SHANK3 genes are responsible for the syndrome, and it is possible that this is the cause of autism that affects many people around the world.

Also in the process, the researchers discovered that many diseases caused by mutations in the ADNP and SHANKS genes can be treated with an existing drug. The research results can be used to develop effective treatments for some cases of autism, schizophrenia and diseases related to brain decline such as Alzheimer’s.
