How does goalkeeper Van Toan explain the mistake against Thailand U23?

The goal made many people wonder what happened to Van Toan in the 34th minute. He lost control of the ball after Ben Davis’s shot, and was frozen to let the ball roll over the line.

After returning to the hotel, the coaching staff let Van Toan talk about his mistake in front of the whole team. Standing in front of his teammates, Van Toan apologized and explained the situation.

Van Toan said he did not control the ball, letting the ball hit his finger (in the perpendicular direction) leading to injury. In an instant, Van Toan felt a sharp pain that made him immobile and unable to accurately judge the situation.

Van Toan only reacted when he heard a shout from Bui Hoang Viet Anh. However, when he tried to push the ball away it was too late. The goal was counted for Ben Davis and Thailand U23 equalized 1-1.

Van Toan sat down on the field, took off his gloves and signaled for medical help. In an unstable mood, Van Toan thought he had broken his arm. However, doctor Choi Ju-young reassured him and said that he only broke his left ring finger. Doctor Choi gave first aid on the spot and took him off the field to make way for Quan Van Chuan.

This injury caused Van Toan to rest for at least a week and certainly missed the end of the 2022 Asian U23 group stage. Quan Van Chuan is almost certainly the replacement name. The number 3 goalkeeper of U23 Vietnam is Dang Tuan Hung.

Before the match, U23 Vietnam recorded many cases of abdominal pain. Center-back Thanh Binh could not play, midfielder Ly Cong Hoang Anh sat on the bench for the whole match. Some players who recovered after taking medicine were brought into the game but were not in the best shape. At the end of the match, many U23 players in Vietnam showed signs of weakness such as strikers Minh Binh and Danh Trung.

U23 Vietnam will have a break from practice on June 3. The team will face the defending U23 champion Korea on the afternoon of June 5 at Lokomotiv Stadium.
