How to stop urinating at night?

Nocturia is more common as you get older — nearly two-thirds of older adults deal with it at least a few nights a week — and for people who drink a lot of fluids, according to Harvard Health. But it is also associated with a number of medical conditions related to the bladder such as bladder obstruction, bladder spasms, bladder infections, cystitis, and interstitial cystitis.

Some people may also experience nocturnal polyuria, a condition that produces large amounts of urine only at night. In most cases, your body retains too much fluid during the day. When you get into bed, fluid from your lower extremities moves to the center of your body, where the kidneys process it into urine.

In both nocturia or nocturia, you can try to limit the number of times you wake up. For starters, limit your water intake at night and don’t drink anything at least two hours before bed. A few sips of water to take any medication will do, but a glass of water anytime close to bedtime will increase your chances of having to wake up. This is especially true for alcohol and caffeine.

If possible, take medications that increase the number of times you urinate during the day. For example, diuretics for high blood pressure or kidney problems can be taken six hours before bedtime.

During the day, elevate your legs while sitting to prevent fluid from building up in your feet, ankles, and legs. Wearing compression stockings can also help reduce swelling and fluid buildup.

For those who need prescription pain relief, a nasal spray sold under the generic name desmopressin acetate can help treat nocturia.

In case you think you are urinating more often than usual, contact your primary care physician. They may refer you to a urologist or urologist, who may then perform an ultrasound or other imaging to help diagnose the problem.
