Video of the moment a strong earthquake hit Japan

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Fukushima in northern Japan last night (March 16), killing four people and injuring 97 others.

According to the AP news agency, a tsunami has reached the shore but the risk warning was lifted this morning (March 17). The area that just hit the quake is the site of a deadly 9-magnitude earthquake and destructive tsunami 11 years ago.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio announced during a parliamentary session this morning that four people were killed in the earthquake and the cause of death is under investigation.

According to Kyodo news agency, a man in his 60s died after falling from the second floor while trying to evacuate, another man in his 70s died of panic and heart attack.

The Japan Meteorological Agency this morning lifted its low-risk advisory for tsunamis along the coasts of Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures. A 30cm high tsunami hit the coast of Ishinomaki, 390km northeast of Tokyo.

Japan’s public broadcaster NHK broadcast images showing walls of a shopping mall falling to the ground and broken windows scattered across the street near Fukushima main station. Many streets were cracked, and water from broken underground pipes erupted.

More than 2.2 million homes in 14 prefectures, including the Tokyo area, were temporarily without power, but as of this morning, the power supply had been restored. The earthquake shook large areas in eastern Japan, including Tokyo, strongly.
