Moscow will also cancel visa-free entry for Japanese nationals visiting four disputed islands in the Pacific Ocean, which Russia calls the Southern Kurils while Tokyo calls the Northern Territories.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also said that Russia would withdraw from dialogue with Japan on establishing joint economic activities on these islands.

In addition, Russia will prevent Tokyo from becoming a sectoral dialogue partner of the Organization for Black Sea Economic Cooperation.

Along with Western countries, Japan has imposed economic sanctions on Russia after Moscow launched a special military operation in Ukraine.

Russia and Japan did not sign a peace treaty after World War II as both claim sovereignty over four islands in the Southern Kuril/Northern Territories.
