The love history of Ho Quy Ly and Princess Huy Ninh

Ho Quy Ly, formerly known as Ly Quy Ly, self-titled Ly Nguyen, was born in 1335. According to the Ho family genealogy, Quy Ly is a distant descendant of Ho Hung Dat, the Zhejiang people. Giang, China, came to work as the Crown Prince of Dien Chau (Nghe An) in the Later Han Dynasty.

The predestined relationship between him and Princess Huy Ninh comes from a couplet that has followed him for many years from his childhood, following his adoptive father to trade in the plains and coastal areas.
Specifically, during a big storm, the merchant boat of father and son Ho Quy Ly fled to the coast. After the tide receded, Ho Quy Ly happened to see the verse: “Quang Han serves Nhat Chi Mai”. As a man of martial arts, he found the verse interesting, so he memorized it and memorized it. Wherever he went, he hummed and commented on it.
According to an anecdote from Kien, recorded by Chu Nhan Hoach in the Qing dynasty, in a coincidence, the king of the Tran dynasty went on a trip to the scene of a love affair to test his heart: “Thanh Thu is the power of Thien Thu cinnamon”. And only Ho Quy Ly could come up with the opposite verse: “Quang Han serves Nhat Chi Mai.”
This couplet was not only praised by Tran Nghe Tong, but also surprised the king because he had a sister, Nhat Chi Mai, who lived in Quang Han palace. When asked why he replied like that, Ho Quy Ly also told the king the old story of the past and happened to see that beautiful verse.
After listening, King Tran thought it was a strange story, maybe the fate of heaven had decided to marry Princess Nhat Chi Mai to Quy Ly. The princess is as beautiful as a branch of white apricot blossom, graceful and elegant, so the folk take her name for the white apricot (bai mai) and combine her name with her husband’s position, also since then this species of apricot is called Mai Ngu su hay. Ho Quy Ly is not only a great reformer with a broad and comprehensive vision, but also a person with a fairly erudite education. According to the book Dai Viet historical records, Ho Quy Ly translated Thien Vo Dat in the book Thuong Thu by Chu Cong; Translated and commented on Confucius’s Classic of Poetry, criticized some of the views of the Luan Ngu book… He also composed the book Minh Dao with 14 chapters for the king, queen, and concubines to study. Before this couplet sentence, Ho Quy Ly was confused, couldn’t think of the right words to respond, until it was past midnight to reply:
– That place is a virgin, please enjoy the beauty of this place
Only then did Princess Nhat Chi Mai stop trying her skills, drink a cup of wine with Quy Ly, and hang out in the flower room.
