Finland suspends rail traffic with Russia

VR’s head of passenger transport, Topi Simola, said that due to Russia sanctions related to the conflict in Ukraine, VR received instructions from the state that the current rail service to Saint Petersburg is no longer suitable. Therefore, VR temporarily suspends this traffic route.

Finland’s minister in charge of national property, Ms. Tytti Tuppurainen, said that one of the reasons for maintaining rail service so far is so that Finns living in Russia can return home; Now the situation has changed and it is no longer appropriate to continue this service.

Before that, air traffic between Russia and the EU was cut off. However, the land border between Finland and Russia remains open to private cars.
