After the collision, two KT-1 military planes crashed into a rice field in Sacheon, about 300km south of Seoul, just minutes after taking off from a nearby base.

About 130 soldiers, 95 policemen, 60 firefighters and three helicopters were dispatched to search the scene, about 6km south of Sacheon Air Base, Yonhap news agency quoted local officials as saying, citing local officials. male.

“Despite their emergency escape efforts… both the pilot trainees and the two instructors on board the two planes were killed,” the South Korean Air Force said in a statement.

Authorities said there were no reports of civilian casualties, but they have formed a team to investigate the cause of the accident and damage, including to the local community.

Yoon Dae-gyu, a 75-year-old farmer who lives near the accident site, said he heard a loud noise like thunder and then saw a piece of metal falling from the sky. “It’s scary to imagine that I might be hit by that object,” said Mr. Yoon.

The KT-1 is a two-seat, single-engine light attack aircraft and trainer, jointly built by the National Defense Development Agency and the Korean Aerospace Industry contractor. The South Korean military has been putting the KT-1 into service since 2000.
