Many people are concerned that the Covid-19 vaccine will affect their children’s puberty: what does the doctor say?

TS.BS. Le Kien Ngai – Head of Infection Prevention and Control Department (National Children’s Hospital) said that there are 3 types of vaccines for children: mRNA vaccines, inactivated vaccines, and recombinant vaccines.

The mRNA vaccine has been deployed in more than 50 countries and in the Western Pacific region alone, 20 countries have been vaccinated. According to WHO, inactivated vaccine has been used in China, Cambodia, UAE… The recombinant vaccine is used in Cuba, Venezuela.

Regarding the information that many people are concerned about the mRNA vaccine affecting the reproductive function and puberty of children aged 5-11, Dr. Ngai said: “This is a question that many parents are concerned about. Because the vaccine has only been developed for a short time, the target audience is “sensitive”, the children have not yet reached puberty from 5-11 years old, so parents are worried. is obvious.

However, in terms of science, the process of developing and using vaccines is very strict. When vaccines are decided to be used in humans, their safety and effectiveness must be verified. In the long term, the vaccine continues to be monitored and evaluated.”.

Vaccine mRNA is essentially a functional messenger RNA that, when entering a cell, binds to a component of the cell ribosome protein. This process will help cells synthesize the spike protein SAR-CoV-2, which has an antigen component that activates the human immune system.

“So the function of mRNA attaches to ribosomes, synthesizes proteins, and will cease to function. When the function is exhausted, mRNA destroyed by cellular enzymes. Thus, in theory, mRNA should not affect the nucleus of the cell. As I analyze scientifically, parents can be completely assured because there is no mechanism to affect the genetic structure.” Doctor Ngai said.

According to Dr. Ngai, in order for children to be vaccinated against Covid-19 safely, doctors recommend parents to monitor their health: 30 minutes after injection, 24 hours after injection, first 3 days, first week. and 28 days after injection.

“After being vaccinated against Covid-19 there may be changes in tachycardia, chest pain, shortness of breath. Therefore, after vaccination, children will be advised not to do heavy physical activity (causes shortness of breath, chest pain, tachycardia) to avoid confusing symptoms of complications after injection. At the same time, strenuous physical activity can also trigger undesirable reactions. Dr. Ngai noted.

Professor Phan Trong Lan, Director of the Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health), also affirmed the safety of the Covid-19 vaccine. Before being used, the vaccine had to go through 3 phases of clinical trials.

After this phase of testing, the vaccine is put into use and continues to be monitored. For the mRNA vaccine was administered and monitored for the elderly group and gradually lowered the age to 12-17 years old and 5-11 years old. Presenting Pfizer and Moderna . mRNA vaccines have injected billions of doses in the world, where there are abnormal reactions after injection, they are informed to international organizations.

“Many people think that once they have Covid-19 they don’t need to be vaccinated. But in fact, the experience of countries around the world shows that people with Covid-19 need to be vaccinated later. Particularly with Children with Covid-19 are usually mild but still at risk of contracting Covid-19 and requiring hospitalization. Vaccination against Covid-19 will reduce this risk to a minimum, help children feel secure to go to school and participate in social activities, and help reduce infection and create immunity in the community.“, Mr. Lan said.
