Locals in Nepal consider the golden tortoise to be the embodiment of Vishnu, one of the three powerful gods in Indian culture, alongside Brahma and Shiva.

According to experts, the reason the turtle has a yellow body is due to an extremely rare genetic pigment mutation.

The Golden Tortoise is a rare mutant found in nature.

Reptile expert Kamal Devkota said: “The golden turtle has had a huge influence on Nepali beliefs and culture.” In the legend, the god Vishnu once transformed into the turtle Kurma to save the creatures that were submerged in the deep water in the disaster.

“People believe that Vishnu has reincarnated as a golden turtle to save humanity from calamity,” Devkota said.

The golden turtle statue represents the god Vishnu.

Today, Vishnu in the form of a turtle is widely worshiped at temples in India. Mr Devkota added: ‘This is the first time I have seen a turtle with such an unusual color. This is the first time Nepal has recorded mutant turtles of this color and is probably the 5th yellow mutant turtle in the world.”

After thorough research, Nepalese experts released the turtle back into the wild. “Such bright colors will make it difficult for the turtle in the wild,” explains Mr Devkota.
