Death row inmates are compensated more than 17 billion dong after 19 years of unjust sentence

In October 1993, Mr. Zhang Yuhuan (then 26 years old) was arrested by the police on suspicion of being involved in the deaths of two neighboring boys in Nanchang city, Jiangxi province (China). .

Two years later, he was sentenced to death for willful intent killing and suspended for two years. During that time, if the defendant shows good performance, the sentence will be reduced to life imprisonment.

Disagreeing with the verdict, Mr. Zhang decided to file an appeal with the Jiangxi Provincial High Court on the grounds that he was forced to confess and was also not entitled to invite a lawyer to defend during the trial. This is completely contrary to China’s criminal procedure law.

However, the appeal was accepted, he still had to sit behind bars with the name of the murderer. In the days that followed, the innocent man and his family never gave up hope.

They constantly wrote letters of complaint to the judicial authorities and together with the lawyer to find evidence that he was innocent.

Prosecutors later also found many inconsistencies in terms of time, place and methods of committing the crime between the two confessions that Mr. Truong signed in 1995. In response to that question, in March 2019, the Court of The Jiangxi Provincial High Court officially overturned the case file.

Here, Truong Ngoc Hoan was found innocent due to insufficient evidence. Finally, after nearly 27 years of being unjustly convicted, he was also vindicated and released at the age of 53.

On the day of his return, he also received a direct apology from the Chief Justice of the High Court for the confusion in the old trial process.

In addition, by October 2020, Mr. Zhang also received a compensation decision from the Jiangxi Provincial High Court.

Accordingly, he will receive about 4.96 million yuan (more than 17 billion dong) in compensation (3.39 million yuan for decades of unjust imprisonment and 1.57 million yuan in compensation fee). mental loss).

It is known that this is also the largest unjust compensation payment ever in China.
