Leaving Pedagogy, female student won a scholarship to major in Electrical Engineering

Studying until the second year of Hanoi National University of Education, Ngo Minh Ngoc decided to turn to Electrical Engineering and won a scholarship of more than 3.2 billion VND.

During the interview round for admission to VinUni University (VinUniversity) at the end of December 2021, Minh Ngoc, 20 years old, a second-year student majoring in high quality Physics Pedagogy, Hanoi National University of Education, received a question. “Why did you decide to leave the Pedagogy major?” Having thought about it for half a year, Ngoc did not hesitate to give a reason, emphasizing that she “didn’t want to make students suffer”.

Minh Ngoc is a former student of Physics, Son La High School for the Gifted. In grade 11, she won the third prize in Physics at the national level, in grade 12 won the second prize; Graduated with special privileges and admitted directly to the university.

During three years of high school, only focusing on studying, Ngoc did not have a clear career direction. Both parents are teachers, Ngoc chose to study Physics Pedagogy at Hanoi National University of Education to continue the family business.

After studying for a year, despite achieving a GPA of 3.94/4.0, Ngoc realized that she was not suitable. “Teaching profession also needs a lot of enthusiasm. Being good at expertise but without passion will not be able to inspire students, and even make them miserable,” Ngoc said. That’s also the reason I want to start my university path again.

Student Son La shared, from the end of her freshman year, she thought about changing her major, aiming for a suitable engineering major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. However, Ngoc was not confident to take the high school graduation exam to get admission scores to a top technical school, because three years of high school she only focused on Physics, Mathematics and English. Moreover, studying Physics for the national exam for excellent students is very different from the final exam – an exam I have never taken.

Ignoring that intention, Ngoc thought about strengthening her profile to “apply” to a school in the US or Europe. But the complicated Covid-19 situation, many countries were still closed, causing Ngoc to hesitate. In the summer of her freshman year, a friend shared a story about winning a scholarship from VinUni, and Ngoc learned that applying to this school was similar to an American university. The female student got to know a few more friends at the school to learn more and start preparing the profile.

Claiming to be quite fluent in English, having received the second prize in the speech contest at the Pedagogical School, Ngoc still has many difficulties when completing her application and essay in English. Having never studied further to get international certificates, Ngoc asked for the support of a friend who competed in the National Physics Competition for excellent students.

Do Xuan Sang, a student of Mechanical Engineering at VinUni University, who supported Ngoc in reviewing CVs and essays, said that at the moment when Ngoc asked for support, Sang believed that Ngoc was capable of admission. become my schoolmate.

In the profile section, Ngoc is confident when she has two National Physics prizes with a GPA of 3.94/4.0 at Hanoi National University of Education. What female students worry about most is the essay. To demonstrate her passion for the subject, the female student told about the Physiad project that she carried out with a group of friends who shared the same passion for Physics. Physiad is a fanpage on Facebook, sharing knowledge and documents through videos explaining experiments, introducing formulas in a different way.

“I study in the mountainous province of Son La, so it is difficult for me to access documents compared to my classmates in big cities. This also motivates me to perform Physiad to contribute to helping young people easily access knowledge, raise Nurture a passion for Physics”, Ngoc shared. After a year of establishment, Ngoc’s fanpage has more than 16,000 likes.

Also in the essay, Ngoc talked about how Physiad’s key team compiled a book of about 200 pages, synthesizing good Physics lessons from international exams for excellent students. The problems are translated into Vietnamese, solved and presented in detail. The team is contacting the publisher to release this book.

In the interview round, in addition to the question about the reason for changing majors or the logical questions about Math – Physics, Ngoc always remembered the question about the scholarship. I share that my family is not too difficult, but with the income from my parents’ teaching profession, I can only study at a school with a tuition fee of more than 800 million dong a year if 100% support is given. If only 90%, I still have to pay more than 80 million, not including living expenses. This level is too high compared to studying at Pedagogy, where I get free tuition.

Ngoc did not expect that candid sharing to be met, with a scholarship of 3.2 billion dong for four years of study. In mid-February, Ngoc received a notice of admission. Despite being advised by her family to “think carefully”, Ngoc still decided to enroll in VinUni. I clearly analyzed with my parents and shared the orientation to apply for a scholarship for higher study abroad after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
