What does it take to become a game programmer?

Proficient in programming languages: To become a game programmer, the first prerequisite is that the candidate must be proficient in a programming language. Games can be created in many different programming languages, so you must be proficient in at least one language, such as Java, C, C++, Javascript… Each language is compatible with certain platforms. If you want to program games on many different platforms, you must know multiple languages.

To pursue a career in gaming, candidates can study a major related to computer science.

Graphics knowledge: The more beautiful the graphic design, the more attractive and eye-catching your game will be, especially the titles with complex contexts and lots of movement. Graphics also affect the process of writing code and processing graphics in the game. Therefore, knowledge of graphics is as important as knowledge of programming.

Knowledge of the game: One thing is for sure, you can’t do this job if you don’t understand the game. In fact, about 90% of game programmers are gamers, have passion and understand games.

Knowledge of math and physics: Math and physics have principles and theorems that are useful in game programming. With action games, these subjects help better programming thinking, and help you describe the character’s movements more accurately and smoothly.

In addition, to become a good programmer and have the opportunity to advance to higher positions, technical competence alone is not enough. You must be on the cutting edge of new industry trends like Agile/Scrum. This model is popularly applied in famous companies in the world such as: Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Spotify, … and leading technology enterprises in Vietnam such as FPT, VNPT, Techcombank, MSB, Viettel …

Game programming is a hobby that requires a lot of passion because this industry is very competitive. The standards, requirements and expectations of the player community in a game are increasing, requiring programmers to be more and more creative.
