British retailer to stop selling wet wipes containing plastic fibers by the end of 2022

The drug retail chain Boots is one of the companies selling wet towel largest in the UK, with over 140 different brands sold related to skin care, baby care, tissues and wellness.

After selling more than 800 million wet wipes by 2021, the company now plans to replace wet wipes made of plastic yarn with biodegradable alternatives from plants.

The Marine Conservation Society reckons that a large proportion of the 11 billion wet wipes used in the UK annually still contain some form of plastic, with evidence suggesting they cause more than nine out of 10 pipe blockages. Drainage.

UK Environment Secretary Rebecca Pow said the move was a “really encouraging commitment from Boots to stop harmful plastics in wet wipes from entering our environment”.

Ms. Rebecca Pow added: “We’ve been calling for evidence on wet wipes, including the possibility of banning those that contain plastic. Meanwhile, our message is clear – you should take out your trash and do not flush the wet towel”.

Marine Conservation Society chief executive Sandy Luk said: “It’s a great step and in the right direction for retailers, like Boots, to remove plastic from their own branded wet wipes and love Ask all the brands they offer to do the same.

Our volunteers found nearly 6,000 wet wipes during the Great British Beach Clean in September 2021, which is an average of 12 wet wipes for every 100 meters of beach surveyed. .
