If the price of electricity is as expensive as the price of gasoline, will Vietnamese people buy electric cars anymore? What about Singaporeans, Thai people?

Recently, Deloitte has released its latest report on Global Automotive Consumer 2022 – Southeast Asia Perspective. From September to October 2021, Deloitte surveyed more than 26,000 consumers in 25 regions to understand various issues affecting the global automotive industry, including the development of advanced technology, sustainability, cost expectations for new vehicles, online shopping experiences, and mobility services.

The survey results show that Southeast Asian consumers still prefer conventional motor vehicles, which raises the question: are we moving fast enough toward a future using conventional vehicles? electric mobility.

Preference for specific EVs varies by region: consumers in Thailand are most interested in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and rechargeable hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), while as Vietnamese, Singaporean and Malaysian consumers prefer hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).

Most consumers in Southeast Asia intend to charge their electric vehicles at home, meaning that the cost of charging at home should also be factored into the total cost of owning the product. Singapore is the only exception, with demand for electric vehicle charging at public charging stations not only much higher than in the rest of the region, but also higher than demand for home charging.

Lower fuel costs, concerns about climate change/reduction in emissions and a better driving experience, are factors driving interest in electric vehicles (EVs). However, the lack of charging infrastructure in public places and distances remain barriers to the use of electric vehicles in Southeast Asia.

The possibility of an increase in electricity prices could cause a large number of Southeast Asian consumers to rethink their decision to buy electric vehicles. On average, more than 4 out of 10 electric vehicle users in Southeast Asia will rethink their purchase decision if electricity prices are as high as fossil fuel prices. This number in Vietnam is 7 out of 10 people.
