As a result, this action wasted approximately 4,000 tons (1,056,680 gallons) over 2 months, enough to fill the school swimming pool at least 11 times.
“We deeply apologize to the residents of the city for causing financial damage to the city.” Yokosuka city government representatives wrote in a statement.
The local government is asking the teacher who caused the incident and two other superintendents to pay half the water bill of 3.5 million yen (equivalent to 620 million VND) to remedy the consequences.
