Massive destruction of fiber optic cables disrupts Internet service in many French cities

According to French telecommunications companies, the attacks happened at around 4 a.m. on April 27. Technical teams were dispatched to quickly fix the problem.

In a statement on Twitter, French telecommunications company Free referred to “malicious attacks” against the cable network. Meanwhile, rival SFR also announced a cable cut in the Paris area and the city of Lyon in Southeast France. Other companies such as Bouygues Telecom are not affected because they use a different network, but many users in other parts of France such as Strasbourg and Grenoble have reported problems.

It is not clear what caused the incident, but experts emphasized that the situation of fiber optic cables being cut simultaneously has never happened before. AFP news agency (France) quoted a security source as saying that a similar incident on this scale had never happened and experts did not know the motive of the recent incidents.
