Giving up cooking, the 58-year-old mother alone conquered 12 Northwest mountains in 3 months

Leaving the kitchen…

After retiring, Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Van (SN 1965, Gia Lai) used to spend all her time taking care of her children and taking care of the kitchen. This woman’s decision to “give up the kitchen” came until she felt she had basically completed her motherly duties. After her two sons and daughter both entered university, plus free time in retirement, Ms. Van wanted to do “things she dreamed of doing her whole life”.

With only a Honda motorbike and a few simple luggage, Ms. Van has experienced countless beautiful landscapes, especially the mountains and forests of Vietnam. When with her children, when with friends, but most of the time she chooses to go alone to have new experiences.

In the early days, Ms. Van constantly received objections from her family. Seeing that her mother is old but still passionate about the dangerous hobby, Hoai Thuong (Miss Van’s daughter) can’t help but worry: “In my eyes, she is very independent, brave and confident. However, I am also very worried and must always follow her journey.”

It is known that due to her careful personality, she has never been seriously injured, so her trips gradually received the support of her husband and children.

According to her, after passionate explorations, she has new perspectives on life and people. Especially with the prejudice surrounding women and cooking in Vietnam.

… until you surpass yourself

The more she conquers nature, the more passionate she is in Nguyen Thi Bich Van. She said: “Mountain climbing is not about conquering the top of the mountain, but overcoming yourself.”

It is hard to believe that a 58-year-old woman can conquer 12 Northwest peaks in just 3 months alone. When asked why Ms. Van conquered dangerous terrain alone, she shared: “I don’t have the grace to go with anyone. The first time I went alone, I felt a bit bored. The second time I invited a nephew to go with me, but after going to one peak, the second peak had already abandoned me.

Next time, I went with a friend in Hanoi. But she walked slowly and woke up late, there was a difference in time zone and travel speed between the two. Therefore, I decided to separate the group and go separately.”

The 58-year-old mother’s journey to conquer the 12 peaks of the Northwest mountains

Most recently, in March 2022, Ms. Van successfully conquered 3 peaks in Lai Chau province: Putaleng, Nam Kang Ho Tao, Ta Lien Son in just 12 days.

Before that, in just 22 days, she also conquered 5 peaks: Phan Xi Pang, Ngu Chi Son, Bach Moc Luong Tu, Lao Than, Nhiu Co San in December 2022. Here, she also conquered many border landmarks, bridges, passes, the westernmost point of the Fatherland, Dien Bien province and ended the journey through Vietnam and the four great peaks of the pass.

Since September 2020, when Ms. Van just started her journey to conquer the Northwest peaks, she has conquered 4 peaks: Ta Xua, Ta Chi Nhu, Lung Cung, Chieu Lau Thi. After completing the 7,800km route, conquering many mountain peaks and discovering many majestic landmarks, Ms. Van has become passionate about mountain climbing.

With only a motorbike and a few simple luggage, Ms. Van has traveled and conquered many roads in Vietnam

Through many journeys, Ms. Van has gained a lot of experience in nature exploration. According to her, in terms of means of transport, riding a motorbike will save travel costs. At the same time can explore many places and visit friends.

Besides, instead of staying at a hotel, you can choose a motel, so the price ranges from 50,000-70,000 VND/night. Climbing also helps her create good habits: Simple carry-on luggage, flexible, careful and steady movement habits.

But in order to gain such experiences, Ms. Van had to go through many difficulties. On the first day of the process of conquering the Northwest peak, she failed because she did not know how to climb the mountain. At the same time, Ta Xua peak is a difficult mountain to conquer in Yen Bai province, making her journey even more difficult.

At that time, Ms. Van could not return to the camp, had to stay awake and suffer the terrible rain at 2am. She recounted: “At that time, I couldn’t walk, I had to hide in a wild cattle shack“.

Ms. Van had to make efforts to overcome the harsh weather from snow and hail. Especially during the winter time, according to her, the mountains and forests are no different “like a freezer compartment”. The roads she used to take were also very dangerous: “There is a 9.8 km long road to the top of Putaleng that is completely steep. The slope is terrible, the slope is 85 – 90 degrees like vertical, I have to crawl up“.

During the climb, she also once slipped, leading to a leg injury. But a little difficulty could not stop the strong footsteps of a woman. She decided to “stagger”, returned to the motorbike, continued her unfinished journey to conquer the Northwest.

Faced with difficulties, there was a time when the 58-year-old mother wanted to give up. However, with the determination and desire to explore nature, she succeeded with the set goals.

Also on the way, she made friends with many friends from all over the country. Meeting many young people who know and admire her, Ms. Van excitedly confided: “Someone who met me said, ‘Miss, I admire and am so happy to meet you. At that time, I encourage you to go a little faster to see the beautiful scenery.

Later, you guys sent me a message that thanks to my encouragement, you came at exactly 4 pm, which is the best time to see the thousand-year-old azalea forest, blooming on the top of Mount Putaleng. I feel very happy and have more motivation to fulfill new passions and dreams.”

Her health also improved. If before, the 58-year-old mother had to face diseases: blood fat, blood sugar, high blood pressure and had to use drugs, now it has been cured. “After the trips, I feel my soul is more refreshed, younger and my body toned“.

Traveling a lot, and experiencing a lot, her temperament is also more open. She confided: “In the past, when my husband and children went out for a bit, I also felt uncomfortable. But now, the spirit is more comfortable, I no longer feel that I am a miserable woman in the kitchen at home.”

In the past, she had specifically conceived: Having money is having everything. However, after long journeys full of adventure, she changed: “If I work hard to make money but don’t know how to enjoy the joys, do the things I dream and improve my health, then life has no meaning.

No matter what job you are doing, at any age, if you are in good health, you should take time to relax and exercise in different ways to avoid being constrained and falling into depression.

After the remarkable success, now, Ms. Van continues to set the goal of conquering the remaining 4 peaks in Lai Chau province.
