53 people died in a house collapse in China
The collapse of a 6-storey building a week ago in Trường Sa city in Hunan province (China) killed 53 people and only 10 survivors were rescued from the rubble.
China Central Television (CCTV), citing information from local officials at a press conference, said the search and rescue operation for victims in the house collapse officially ended at around 3 a.m. (local time) today (May 6) after 1 week of implementation.
“All people trapped and lost contact in the accident have been found, 10 people survived, 53 people died,” CCTV reported. The last survivor was rescued from the scene on the night of May 5. This person and the remaining 9 survivors are said to be in good health after being hospitalized for treatment.
Residential and commercial buildings suddenly collapsed on the afternoon of April 29. This is a complex of houses, restaurants and a cafe.
At least nine people have been arrested on suspicion of ignoring building safety rules and other violations. Those arrested included the owner of the building, three people in charge of the design and construction stages, and five other people accused of misjudging the safety from the 4th to 6th floors of the building.
Rescuers used sniffer dogs, hand tools, drones and other electronic devices to detect survivors at the scene. In a news report about the 8th survivor’s rescue on May 2, Chinese media said that the rescue force only dared to dig around but could not completely demolish the work, because the structure its uncertain.
Building collapses are not uncommon in China. In January, an explosion suspected of a gas leak collapsed a building in the city of Chongqing, killing 12 people. By June 2021, a gas explosion in a residential area in Shiyan City, Hubei Province also claimed the lives of 25 people.
