Since the 7th grade, Binh Nguyen has started participating in the UPU International Letter Writing Competition. At Nguyen Tri Phuong Secondary School, the management board organizes the contest into an annual activity. Participating students are graded and awarded school-level prizes, then continue to compete in the national competition.

This year’s contest runs from November 2021 to March 2022 with the theme “Write a letter to an influencer explaining why and how they need to act on the climate crisis”. Nguyen’s climate assessment is a broad field but not too difficult because “I can directly see and feel”.

Originally, Nguyen took the idea of transforming into the wind, writing a letter to a famous, Oscar-winning director, to share his thoughts on change and the climate crisis. However, I feel that I do not understand deeply about movies. Nguyen remembers pianist Dang Thai Son. The male student thinks that if he turns to music, he will be easier to express because he has been learning piano since 5th grade. “Music has no borders, so I want to use music to convey the message of the letter,” Nguyen said. .

The male student said that the process of finding ideas is always a challenge for him. Nguyen’s Literature teacher also said that the student often takes a long time to come up with ideas. But once the direction is chosen, the remaining stages do not cause difficulties for Nguyen because she has abundant writing power.

After finalizing the idea, Nguyen spent two weeks reading more books, newspapers and documents on climate issues. For Nguyen, this is not difficult because watching the news is also a habit he has built by his parents since childhood. The understanding of current events is clearly expressed by Binh Nguyen in the letter.

Nguyen took a month to complete the first draft, more than 1,300 words. Being advised by the teacher not to be too tight, giving many details, I edited and shortened it to about 1,000 words. “Through the letter, I want to send a message Everyone has the ability and responsibility to prevent climate change“, Nguyen shared.

At the school level competition, Nguyen’s letter won the first prize. Her letter with elaborate words and profound content is also expected by teachers at the school to win the national prize. However, the first prize was still a surprise result for Nguyen and the teachers. For the first time, Nguyen Tri Phuong Secondary School and Ba Dinh district have students win the national first prize in the UPU International Letter Writing Contest. The organizers also said that “it’s been a long time since a male student achieved this achievement”.

Ms. Pham Thi Huong Giang, principal of Nguyen Tri Phuong Secondary School, said that it was not only when she participated in the contest that Nguyen “makes friends with words”. At school, male students are quite famous for their passion for literature. I’m a bit shy, I’m not good at expressing myself, but I can express my thoughts and abilities when writing.

Formerly an active member of the literary club, often composing short stories, published in the Newspaper Young Pioneers and Child as well as school publications. “This is the result of a long journey and proper preparation, not only for Nguyen but also for the school,” said Ms. Giang.
