Two scientists receive the Ta Quang Buu Prize in 2022

Prof. Dr. Ngo Viet Trung and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Le Thu are two scientists who were awarded the Ta Quang Buu Prize in 2022 by the Ministry of Science and Technology for their excellent basic research works.

Prof. Dr. Ngo Viet Trung (1953) working at the Institute of Mathematics, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, was awarded for his work. “Depth functions of symbolic powers of homogeneous ideals”published in the journal Inventiones Mathematica in 2019, in Mathematics.

Professor Trung is one of Vietnam’s veteran mathematicians. His main research direction during the past 40 years has been commutative algebra and its applications in algebraic geometry.

With works “Depth functions of symbolic powers of homogeneous ideals”, This is the first time that a mathematical work by Vietnamese scientists has been published in the world’s leading journal of mathematics – Inventiones Mathematica. This work also solved some difficult conjectures in the field of commutative algebra of mathematics.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Le Thu, working at University of Science and Technology, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, was awarded for her work. “Tailoring the Hard−Soft Interface with Dynamic Diels-Alder Linkages in Polyurethanes: Toward Superior Mechanical Properties and Healability at Mild Temperature”published in the journal Chemistry of Materials in 2019, in the Department of Chemistry.

Assoc. She has been awarded the Outstanding Female Scientist Award and a scientific research scholarship by the Scientific Council of L’Oreal – UNESCO For the Development of Women in Science.

The work that helped her win the Ta Quang Buu award this time is considered a pioneer in the trend of self-healing PU composites, a direction with great potential in Vietnam. The work is done entirely in the country, with all the authors are Vietnamese.
