Ukrainian soldiers in the Azovstal factory begged for help

The Azov Battalion entrenched in the Azovstal factory posted a series of photos of wounded soldiers and called on the United Nations and the Red Cross to evacuate them.

A series of photos posted on the Telegram account of the Azov Battalion today show a makeshift, poorly lit “hospital” in the basement of the Azovstal steel plant in the city of Mariupol, southern Ukraine. The soldiers in the photo were all injured, some lost their arms, some lost their legs.

“The whole civilized world must see the conditions that the soldiers protecting the wounded and disabled Mariupol are going through,” the post on the account read. “In completely unsanitary conditions, with the open wound covered with leftover bandages that were not disinfected, there was no necessary medicine, not even food.”

Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk on May 10 said: more than 1,000 soldiers, in which hundreds were injured, remained in the Azovstal factory. Ms. Vereshchuk said that the seriously injured needed urgent evacuation and the situation worsened every day.

The Azovstal Steel Plant is the only stronghold of Ukrainian forces in Mariupol. The bunker system under the factory has become a entrenched place for members of the Azov Battalion of the Interior Ministry of Ukraine since it was besieged by Russian forces in early March.

Russia has repeatedly called on the Ukrainian soldiers in the factory to lay down their arms and surrender, pledging to guarantee their lives.
