Discover the Met Gala look with Anthony Ramos-Fashion Trends
While there are certain stars we always keep our eyes on (Rihanna, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kim Kardashian…), we might be a little more excited for first-timers.
All of the Tommy Hilfiger looks made for this year’s Met Gala have been created using alternative materials and Ramos’ styling is no exception. His custom white poncho is sewn from sail fabric, and the rest includes a white cotton tuxedo shirt, bow, and navy blue silk wool pants, all made of vintage deadstock fabric.
Ramos helped add some meaningful symbols to the suit such as his initials on the right arm, his birth year 1991 on the left, the year Tommy Hilfiger was founded (1985) on the back. of the jacket, and both the US and Puerto Rican flags sewn on make the process so seamless. Additionally, Ramos is wearing a pair of shoes owned by designer Hilfiger himself. “Everything is about sustainability and reusability,” he says of the personal changes to the outfit. “I didn’t want it to be like a costume, I wanted it to have a lot of sentimental value.”
Ramos’ styling celebrates the inspiration of American fashion. “Oh, it’s red and white and blue, honey, it’s all Americana. With the colour, again, the canvas, it’s all-encompassing,” he said. “You keep the classic, but you just make it new, and that’s the Americana style.”
Ramos grew up shopping at thrift stores in his hometown of New York City, such as Beacon’s Closet and Buffalo Exchange, so he wants to reuse what you own. He also feels a special connection to the brand, as Tommy Hilfiger was an important figure in New York City’s hip-hop culture when Ramos was growing up.
“When Tommy started getting into hip-hop culture, that’s when the kids went crazy,” he said. My favorite, it’s not even a piece of clothing but a perfume. Yo, I made this perfume last forever and then I kept it for a long time.”
As he wore the sustainable Tommy Hilfiger suit on the red carpet at his first Met Gala, Ramos felt grateful. “It was emotional when this opportunity came,” he said. “Tommy is the embodiment of New York, and I’m from New York, you know? I just feel lucky that I can bring out my style, my taste.”
After watching the Met Gala on television for years, Ramos is delighted to finally make his debut here. He also looks forward to finally meeting some friends namely Lin Manuel-Miranda and Jeremy Pope. “I am delighted to present the work the team has worked so hard on,” he said. “It was truly a night of celebration, celebrating fashion and celebrating life. I’m just really excited when I hope to meet some friends and socialize there and celebrate and have that moment at the same time.”
The partnership has been going on for a long time, culminating in amazing results. Despite that, Ramos remains humble and grateful for the successes he has achieved in his career so far. “All of this is a stroke of luck and it’s all a gift, all of these opportunities and the opportunities present at events like this,” he said. “To represent my family and have the opportunity to express my culture in a brand that I love.”
