In October 2020, a 24-year-old Singaporean girl – Charlene Chew had a terrible accident that resulted in half-face disfigurement.

On the day of the incident, Charlene and her boyfriend ate donuts at their apartment in Melbourne, Australia. However, after finishing the dish, Charlene’s strange boyfriend forgot to turn off the heat, leaving the pan of boiling oil on the stove without realizing it.

When Charlene discovered the incident, the kitchen was filled with smoke from the burning oil pan. In an emergency, she made a terrible mistake, which was to put a pan of boiling oil in the sink and open the faucet.

After that, Charlene was quickly taken to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment. The results showed that the young girl suffered burns to 75% of her face, fortunately her eyes were not seriously affected.

At that time, Charlene had to spend 3 weeks in the hospital to receive treatment in pain. “I felt like I was stripped of my identity. At that time even I couldn’t recognize myself when I looked in the mirror. It was scary!”, Charlene said.

After the accident, Charlene was brought back to Singapore by her family for further treatment. During that time, the girl often had to wear a mask and special clothes to keep her skin smooth again. In addition, she also constantly has to perform skin grafting surgery and a series of other facial muscle rehabilitation exercises. Regularly practicing the sport of calisthenics also helps her mind become much more comfortable.
