During 10 years of fighting against the Kim invaders in the North, Nhac Phi experienced 126 battles and was never defeated. He was compared with heroes of the Han Dynasty such as Han Tin, Peng Viet, Chu Bo, and Quan Anh.

Yue Fei skillfully took advantage of the difficult terrain to make it difficult for the enemy cavalry, which was many times outnumbered. But until the end of his life, he did not fulfill his wish to retake the northern lands that the Southern Song Dynasty lost to the Kim invaders.

Invincible generals

Born in the Song Dynasty to lose control of the northern territory to the Jin’s Nuns, Yue Fei hesitated between going to war, dedicating to the country, and staying at home to take care of her elderly mother.

Seeing this, the mother left a tattoo on Yue Fei’s back, with the meaning “serve the country”. That was when Yue Fei emerged in the Song army, compared to the generals who had a conciliatory view of the Kim invaders.

After losing the northern territory, the Song court moved the capital to Hangzhou, regrouped under Emperor Cao Tong, after the father and brothers were all exiled by the Kim invaders.

The young, inexperienced emperor had to rely on the prime minister Qin Coi to rule the country during difficult times. Tong Cao Tong stood between two options, peace to keep the remaining territory, or continue the war with slim hope.

For Yue Fei, he was always determined to fight the Kim enemy. In 1130, the Kim dynasty launched a large-scale campaign to march south. Yue Fei at that time was 27 years old and commanded 40,000 troops and directly engaged Kim General Ngot Truc and won a decisive victory, not only repelling the Kim army but also regaining Kim Lang.

Legend has it that Yue Fei was tattooed with four words on his back by his mother with the instruction to serve the country.

In 1134, the Kim Dynasty again invaded and occupied 6 districts in Truong Giang. Yue Fei led the Song army to fight bravely, reclaim the lost territory, and show loyalty to the country.

Thua triumphed, in 1136, the Song army under the chairmanship of generals Truong Tuan, Nhac Phi, Han The Trung… took the Northern army to punish.

Yue Fei sent out troops in Tuong Duong town, raised the east and west, ordered his subordinate General Niu Cao to pretend to advance, while he led the main army to attack the northwest, entered the southern bank of the Yellow River, and subdued him. a large land for the Southern Song Dynasty.

People everywhere welcomed Yue Fei and the army, hundreds of large and small insurgents asked to respond. This caused the lords of the court, led by the prime minister, Qin Coi, to panic, and ordered to withdraw the Northern armies to return.

In the last time he led the army against the Kim invaders in 1140, Yue Fei made a great feat of destroying the elite cavalry team of Ngot Truc, defeating the main army of Kim. Yue Fei at that time was very close to reclaiming the ancient capital from the Kim family.

In 1142, the Southern Song Dynasty took advantage of the victories of the soldiers on the battlefield as a basis for peace with the Kim dynasty, returning the land Yue Fei captured during 10 years of war.

Death

When he was summoned back to the capital from the front lines, Yue Fei was furious because he was forced to return the land won with the blood of his soldiers to the Kim invaders. He exclaimed: “10 years of my efforts were ruined in a single day. It’s not that I didn’t fulfill my duty, but the prime minister, Qin Coi, deceived the emperor.”

Yue Fei did not know that the generals beside her were gradually being bribed by Qin Coi. Some people believe that Yue Fei is illiterate, others have to withdraw to preserve their lives. As a result, Yue Fei was stripped of all his military rights, lost his position as Grand Marshal, and was imprisoned.

Before the Lunar New Year in 1142, Yue Fei died in prison. Later history books recorded that the prime minister Qin Coi ordered poisoning to eliminate the threat.

Chinese history books describe Qin Coi as the villain in Yue Fei’s bitter death. But historian James TC Liu, believes that the Song emperor Cao Song also had conflicts with Yue Fei.

Cao Tong may have worried that if he decided to punish the North, the Song family exiled in the Kim land might be made puppets. Cao Tong also did not want to risk waging war in order to lose power, according to historian James TC Liu.

During his lifetime, Yue Fei also repeatedly disobeyed the emperor’s orders, when he was assigned the responsibility of quelling peasant rebellions. Cao Tong wants to kill all the people in a village, but Yue Fei just wants to track down the mastermind of the trouble.

Yue Fei’s spontaneous actions and merits accidentally became a thorn in the eyes of those close to the emperor. Qin Hui was concerned that letting Yue Fei act freely would mean that one day, Yue Fei could return to the capital to “account” with her.

Anecdotes say that, after Yue Fei died, marshal Han The Trung questioned Qin Coi. “Professional Yue Fei, where’s the proof? Qin Coi replied, “No, but there’s no need.”
