At that time, Nhat Linh’s relatives did not agree with the sentence and asked for a stricter sentence for the accused, but the prosecutor’s office rejected this appeal.

At the first appellate trial on July 6, 2018, the Chief Justice of the Chiba Prefectural Court sentenced Shibuya to life in prison for the murder of Nhat Linh. Next, at the trial on March 23, 2021, the Tokyo High Court rejected the argument of the defense lawyer for defendant Shibuya that it was necessary to remove the DNA evidence used to convict the subject because they were collected “illegally”. The presiding judge of the trial at that time affirmed that this was not so serious that the test results had to be removed from the basis of accusing the defendant.

Defendant Shibuya, 49, was arrested in 2017 on suspicion of murdering Nhat Linh. The girl went missing on March 24, 2017, on her way to Mutsumi Daini Elementary School in Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture. Authorities found her body two days later in a ditch 10km from her house. The case shook the Vietnamese community in Japan and the Vietnamese in the country.

What made the public angry was that the killer Shibuya was the president of the parent association at the school the victim attended. At the time of the murder, Nhat Linh was a 3rd grader at Mutsumi Daini School in Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture.
