Sell your house to retire on a luxury yacht to satisfy your passion for travel

Selling their house and giving up their passionate job, the couple living in the city of Seattle in the US state of Washington carried their personal suitcases to travel around on luxury yachts.

According to 7News, since May 2021, the couple Angelyn and Richard Burk in their 50s have been enjoying life at sea instead of working hard every day from home to work and vice versa.

The Burk and his wife say that the cost of living on a yacht is much cheaper than paying off a mortgage to buy a house.

“We love to travel and have been looking to continue traveling into our old age with a personal retirement budget,” said Angelyn, a former accountant.

Over the years, the couple have boarded and disembarked various cruise ships to explore the world including a 51-day trip from Seattle to Sydney. On their list of favorite destinations are Singapore, Italy, Canada and the Bahamas.

“When planning my trips, I try to stay on the same boat as long as possible, because it saves money,” Angelyn told CNN.

“There is no place where you can relax by the pool, go to different countries during your retirement, like living on a cruise ship,” added Ms Angelyn.

Despite setting a daily spending limit of 135 USD/day, the elderly couple tries to save as much as possible to have a little more than the original plan. They insist there are no plans to settle permanently on the mainland in the future.

“This year, we stayed on the yacht for 86 days with an average cost of $89/day for 2 people. This amount includes room, meals, entertainment, transportation, port fees and taxes. I pay for it all through my retirement budget,” Angelyn said.

According to Ms. Angelyn, because she is a smooth customer on yachts and enjoys preferential treatment from the loyalty program, she and her husband receive a large discount when buying tours.

According to Zillow, the value of an ordinary house in the town where the Burks and their grandparents live in Seattle is worth more than $984,000. In the past year, house prices in this area have increased by 17.8%. On average, an individual will have to pay $5,034 for a 30-year fixed mortgage every month, or $60,408 per year.

Before that, according to Oddity Central, Mr. Mario Salcedo (72 years old) born in Miami city, Florida state of the United States of America also spent 23 years living on yachts and rarely set foot on land.

Mr. Salcedo has worked for many large financial companies such as Federal Express. But he decided to resign in 1997 at the age of 47 to enter a new chapter in his life. Mr. Salcedo only returned to his small apartment in Miami when the Covid-19 epidemic broke out. He lived at home for 15 months.

To pay for his life on a cruise ship for more than two decades, Mr. Salcedo has used savings from his job as a financier, and income from his current job. Accordingly, Mr. Salcedo is currently working as a portfolio manager for private clients from the deck.

It is known that Mr. Salcedo limits the budget for trips from 60,000 to 70,000 USD/year.
