Phong was the Mercedes driver who caused an accident that injured flight attendant Nguyen Thi Bich Huong (28 years old) and Le Manh Thuong (Grab driver) died.

At the first instance hearing in December 2020, the People’s Court of Phu Nhuan district sentenced Phong to 7 years and 6 months in prison, forced to pay 1.4 billion VND to Nguyen Thi Bich Huong and 477 million VND to Le Manh Thuong’s family.

After the first-instance hearing, Ms. Huong filed an appeal against the entire judgment. On the side of Phong, thinking that the sentence was too severe, the defendant also applied for a reduction in the punishment.

At the appeal session in April 2021, after deliberation, the People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City suddenly decided to cancel the entire first-instance judgment because it was necessary to consider the origin of the house as defendant Phong’s or his mother’s. fox. Because, during the interrogation, defendant Phong said that this apartment was actually his mother’s. Because at the time of buying this house, the defendant’s mother did not have a household registration certificate and did not have an identity card, so she let Phong buy the house in her name.

And Phong’s mother, Mrs. M., also confirmed that the house was because her father had given her 800 million dong before he died, plus she borrowed more to buy. Because she previously violated the law and had to go to prison, when she was released from prison, her brothers and sisters could not re-import, so she did not have a household registration card or identity card, so she let her son buy the apartment in her name.

During additional investigation, Mr. Thuong’s daughter claimed a total of 417 million VND (previously received 60 million VND).

Huong also compensated an additional 300 million VND to cover the cost of the upcoming surgery, bringing the total amount that Huong claimed for compensation to 1.7 billion VND.

Additional investigation process, on February 14, 2022, Phu Nhuan District Police ordered the seizure of the apartment at Dream Home apartment (ward 14, Go Vap district) as Phong’s property to ensure liability. civil compensation for the victims.

According to the first-instance judgment, at 5:00 am on January 30 (the 6th of the Lunar New Year), Phong drove a Mercedes from the basement of the 108 Hong Ha building, Phu Nhuan district, to the Hoang Minh Giam intersection.

When coming to 123 Hong Ha, due to not controlling the speed, Phong drove his car into the opposite lane, directly hitting Mr. Le Manh Thuong’s motorbike. At this time, Mr. Thuong was carrying Nguyen Thi Bich Huong, traveling in the opposite direction.

The accident caused Mr. Thuong to die at the hospital. Ms. Huong was lucky to escape death, but was injured up to 79%.
