Severe sandstorm in Iraq and Kuwait

Severe sandstorms have forced Iraq to close international airports in the cities of Baghdad, Erbil and Najaf and many government agencies. This is the 9th sandstorm to hit the country since mid-April.

Meanwhile, Kuwait also suspended all flights at Kuwait’s international airport due to reduced visibility.

The frequency of sandstorms is increasing, with more seriousness in recent years. Indiscriminate exploitation of water resources, lack of planning, indiscriminate grazing and deforestation are believed to be the causes of more frequent sandstorms.
