Perfectly beautiful, but just for viewing, is an expensive lesson that nature gives people

Bridges over rivers are always likened to giant arms bringing people closer to each other. Called a bridge, of course it is for travel. However, in the world, there is a very special bridge that people call “the most useless bridge on earth”. Because it’s been there like that without any benefit, all these years…

Why is it called a useless bridge?

Honduras is a beautiful country with many natural landscapes that captivate people. But this Central American country is also not favored by mother nature when it suffers from many storms and tornadoes every year.

The buildings, roads, bridges and culverts here must be built solidly to avoid consecutive natural disasters.

In 1935, on the Choluteca River of Honduras, a bridge was built named Choluteca Bridge. It is likened to a “copy” of the world famous Golden Gate Bridge and is the pride of local people. However, in 1998, Hurricane Mitch swept through Honduras, causing damage to the Choluteca Bridge. Heavy vehicles are no longer allowed to cross the bridge for safety reasons.

Two years earlier, in 1996, the Choluteca River witnessed the appearance of another large bridge.

A Japanese construction company has won the bid and started bidding for a new bridge to serve the travel needs of people. Engineers gave the project the name New Choluteca Bridge, also known as the Sunrise Bridge. The official name is Puente Sol Naciente Bridge.

2 years later, in 1998, the new Choluteca bridge was officially inaugurated. The cars on the spacious, beautiful and sturdy bridge make people more excited. It is likened to a masterpiece of modern design and engineering.

As people drove from one side of the Choluteca River to the other, they couldn’t help but marvel at the new bridge. It is Choluteca’s pride and joy.

However, the joy is short-lived. That same year, it was the storm Mitch that swept away people’s houses and villages, and many roads were destroyed, completely disappearing. Rainfall is approximately 1,900mm in just four days – the equivalent of six months’ total rainfall. The Choluteca River rose and flooded the entire area, 7,000 people lost their lives.

Although the (old) Choluteca was damaged, the new Choluteca was still standing, standing there after the terrible anger of mother nature.

But, what one never expected was that the storm changed the course of the Choluteca River. The river now flows beside the bridge. Not below, but next to the bridge!

So, although sturdy enough to withstand the storm, the new Choluteca bridge has become a useless bridge. It has no destination or destination, does not cross a river, and leads nowhere.

Lessons mother nature gives people

More than 20 years have passed since that day, but the lesson left by the Choluteca bridge is still valid. The destructive power of natural disasters is too great, far beyond all human expectations. Indeed, how could any engineer think that the river would change direction to design more legs for the bridge to run after the water?

The story of the Choluteca bridge also formed a new idiom. In American English there is a saying: “Don’t be the Choluteca Bridge. Be relevant with time” (Translation: Don’t turn yourself into a Choluteca bridge. Try to adapt to the situation).

This idiom is derived from the story of the Choluteca bridge. After a storm suddenly became useless.

The bridge is a metaphor for the events that can happen to our lives, to any individual or organization. The best way is to adapt, transform, transform and improve your skills so as not to make yourself useless!
