A 66-year-old Irish man was taken to hospital with short-term memory loss after having sex with his wife.

Some people aged 50-70 may experience temporary memory loss after having sex.

This unusual incident was analyzed in the May issue of the Irish Medical Journal, published May 26, with doctors claiming that sex was the cause of short-term amnesia, officially known as Transient Global Amnesia (TGA).

The Mayo Clinic defines TGA as “a period of sudden, temporary memory loss not caused by a common neurological condition such as epilepsy or stroke.”

In the case of the Irish man mentioned above, the medical journal reported that he suffered short-term memory loss within 10 minutes of having sex.

After having sex with his wife, the man looks at the date on his phone and becomes distressed because he forgot his wedding anniversary the day before. In fact, he had celebrated his wedding anniversary the day before, and yet he had absolutely no memory of it at the time.

This rare condition usually affects people between the ages of 50 and 70. Some people with TGA may not remember things that happened a year earlier, but long-term memory is intact. can remember events that happened long before. Others usually regain their memory within a few hours.

This man had previously developed transient amnesia (TGA) in 2015 shortly after having sex. He then regained his short-term memory. Fearing that he might have another episode of TGA, the man went to the local emergency room, where a neurological exam showed completely normal. His memory returned again a short time later.

The authors of the paper in the Irish Medical Journal – who work in the Department of Neurology at the University of Limerick Hospital – say up to 10% of people with TGA will have a follow-up episode.

The authors also assert that TGA is associated with a number of activities including physical activity such as immersion in cold or hot water, emotional stress, pain, and sexual intercourse. Even so, experts say, TGA is not considered serious.
