Previously, Saqqara was considered an “ancient animal cemetery” and was the place to worship the goddess Bast – a deity in the form of a cat. However, after the excavation of mummies of other animals and statues of other gods in 2019, the complex was renamed. Excavation director Mohammed Al Saidi said: “Today’s discovery has confirmed that the temple is not only dedicated to cats but also to other Egyptian gods.”

The cemetery at Saqqara is located on the edge of a desert plateau, about 25km south of Cairo. This is the site of large-scale excavations of Egyptian archaeologists since 2018. The recent discovery is the fifth major announcement since this time.
