According to Reuters news agency, the US also blacklisted 71 Russian and Belarusian entities, including several aircraft factories and research institutes and shipyards. To date, the US Department of Commerce has placed 322 entities on an economic blacklist for alleged support of the Russian military since February.

On June 2, the leaders of the European Union (EU) finally approved the sixth round of EU sanctions against Russia, after many disagreements with Hungary.

EU leaders agreed that the ban on crude oil imports will come into full force by the end of 2022. The new package of sanctions includes a ban on imports of Russian oil transported by sea and will expand in the future to include Pipeline transportation. Hungary and two other landlocked Central European countries are guaranteed exemptions from pipeline oil imports.

This sixth round of sanctions also includes the removal of Russia’s largest bank Sberbank from the SWIFT international trading system. “The new measures will reduce Russia’s ability to finance the military operation,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The Russian Foreign Ministry warned that a sixth package of sanctions against Russia could potentially destabilize the global energy market, calling it an act of “self-destruction” that could backfire by the EU. The Russian Foreign Ministry affirmed that Moscow will overcome the consequences of unilateral sanctions imposed by the EU, while claiming to remain a reliable trading partner in the international arena.

After the EU decided to embargo most of Russian oil, experts said this move is unlikely to cause significant damage to Moscow in the near future as Europe expected. The ban will reduce Russian oil output to Europe, but Moscow can compensate through the rapid increase in world oil prices.
