Massive explosion at sea causes death in Mariupol, suspected torpedo

According to the militia of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, the explosion on June 3 left two civilians – including a child – dead.

Several witnesses said they heard a loud explosion and saw water being blown about 30 meters above the sea.

Donetsk officials only described the cause as “an explosive object”. However, according to local media, the victims may have accidentally approached a torpedo. This torpedo exploded after hitting an unidentified object near the shore.

Mariupol’s public beach is located near the Azovstal steel plant – where the force Ukraine and Azov Battalion held for many months before surrendering at the end of May.

Immediately after taking full control of Mariupol, Russian forces conducted demining. On May 26, the head of the Russian Defense Operations Center – Mikhail Mizintsev said that the country’s military had completed demining in the city of Mariupol and inspected more than 50km of the Azov coast.

Russia’s Emergencies Ministry also said that experts have handled more than 24,000 “explosive objects” on the territory of the self-proclaimed republics in the Donbass since the military operation began in late February.

Mariupol is located in the southern part of what Russia considers to be the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic.

Previously, Russia has repeatedly accused Ukraine of planting mines in ports in the Black Sea and in the waters near its territory. According to Moscow, such actions could pose a threat to civilian navigation and affect commercial operations.
