CNN quoted this official as saying that, despite having the advantage in the number of weapons in the air, Russia still has not had the upper hand in the sky over Ukraine. Earlier, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine said that the Russian military used Kalibr cruise missiles and Iskander tactical missile systems to attack the country.

According to AP news agency, Russian troops are still pouring fire on the cities of Ukraineincluding the capital Kiev and an aircraft repair facility in Lviv, near the border with Poland.

Last night, Ukrainian officials said that the besieged port city of Mariupol had lost access to the Sea of Azov and that Russian forces were still attacking the area. It is not clear whether the Russian army has controlled Mariupol or not. Mariupol was an important trading port in the Sea of Azov, which was connected to the much larger Black Sea by a narrow strait.

French President Emmanuel Macron yesterday asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop besieging Mariupol, allow humanitarian corridors to operate and cease fire immediately.

The French and Russian leaders had a 70-minute phone call, the French president’s office said. Earlier, on the same day, President Putin spoke by phone with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and received a request for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, a top US commander in the Middle East said there was no sign that Russia was moving troops out of Syria to bolster its forces in Ukraine.

US General Frank McKenzie told reporters that he saw little change in Russia’s military activities in Syria.
