Surprise with “extraordinary” images taken from the world’s most powerful telescope-Information Technology

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has passed its first mission with this “extraordinary” color image sent back to NASA.

On March 16 (local time), officials at the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) shared a stunning photo of a star captured by the James space telescope. Webb (JWST). In this image, several galaxies are in focus and distant stars can be seen in the background.

The JWST main mirror is made up of a row of 18 individual mirrors, and once properly aligned they will act as a single mirror face.

And although that self-alignment is still being worked on, the researchers say they were overwhelmed by the test images the telescope captured.

“The images are brought together as finely as the laws of physics,” said Marshall Perrin, an associate professor of research on the Webb telescope at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. But when we focus our eyes on the stars, we can see the entire universe in the background, maybe even stars and planets in the distance.”

Lee Feinberg, Webb optical telescope element director at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, commented: “Last fall, we said we could evaluate the telescope’s performance. thanks when we received a picture of a star. Now we are looking at this image and are absolutely delighted that the telescope’s optical performance does an extraordinary job. It’s doing very well, if not better, than we expected.”

In this test, Webb focused on a star named 2MASS J17554042 + 6551277. A red filter was applied to the image, to bring out the contrast of the star and the galaxies.

JWST is the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, which not only provides stunning images but is also crucial in providing scientific knowledge about the universe and its origins. The $10 billion JWST telescope, which has a much larger main mirror than Hubble (2.7 times larger in diameter and about 6 times larger in area), gives it a variety of light-gathering capabilities. and the sensitivity is significantly improved compared to the Hubble.

The telescope was launched into space by Christmas 2021, and the research teams seem to have had to “hold their breath” over concerns that many parts of the telescope may not work as planned.

But the telescope’s massive sunshade, with 107 locking pins holding it in place, launched correctly and everything has gone according to plan, so far.

If the operation is completed, scientists believe that the telescope will be able to go back in time, possibly 100 million years after the Big Bang. And scientists not only think they can look back at galaxies from that point on, but also determine the composition of those galaxies.
