The people of the Fukushima nuclear disaster area have sporadically returned

Mr. Yasushi Hosozawa returned to Futaba on the first day the town partially reopened. Before the nuclear disaster 11 years ago, this was once home to about 7,000 residents. Now, sporadic people have begun to return.

Mr. Yasushi Hosozawa – Futaba Town, Japan shared: “Since the disaster happened, I have always wanted to return to Futaba. I always think about this.”

Mr. Hosozawa is one of the few people who have returned to Futaba since the beginning of the year, however, in order to have food and daily necessities, he still has to go out of town to buy. The poverty of a town still struggling to overcome the consequences of the disaster made many people hesitate to return. Not only is there a lack of necessities, but there is also a lack of schools and clinics, making families with young children even more hesitant.

Ms. Atsuko Yamamoto – Futaba Town, Japan said: “Our old houses and towns are no longer the same, so sad”.

Futaba is the last of 12 towns that were closed due to the Fukushima nuclear disaster to reopen, if only partially. There are still areas that are still undergoing intensive decontamination, which are expected to reopen next year.
