COVID-19 booster shot provides protection for people over 65 after 15 weeks

This is the result of a new study released by the UK’s Health Security Agency on March 24.

The UK Health Security Agency’s latest vaccine surveillance report estimates, effectiveness of vaccines against hospitalization for 15 weeks after booster shot, at 85%, down from 91% two weeks after injection third dose of vaccine.

The study’s calculations involving people who were hospitalized primarily for respiratory problems showed that their hospitalizations were more likely to be related to COVID-19.

For people between the ages of 18 and 64, the vaccine’s effectiveness against hospitalization appeared to drop even more sharply, to 67 percent at 15 weeks, compared with 88 percent two weeks after injection.

This could be because young people are more likely to be hospitalized for another reason, and possibly COVID-19, skewing the numbers, making the vaccine seem like less effective.

However, the report reiterates that protection against symptomatic disease decreased significantly for all groups, from about 60 to 75% effective two to four weeks after booster injection to between 25 and 25. up to 40% after 15 weeks.

The UK mainly uses COVID-19 vaccines developed by BioNTech-Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca. The booster vaccination program in the country, which began in September 2021, already uses vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna.
