Madeleine Albright, appointed Secretary of State by President Bill Clinton on December 5, 1996 and confirmed by the US Senate with 100% of the votes, became the first female secretary of state in American history.

Ms. Albright took office on January 23, 1997, has served as chair of the Albright Stonebridge Group and is a Professor of Diplomatic Practice at Georgetown University. She served as US Secretary of State from 1997-2001.

In May 2012, she was awarded the Medal of Freedom by then US President Barack Obama. The late US Secretary of State supported the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Albright has pushed for NATO to intervene in the Balkans to prevent genocide and ethnic cleansing, seek to reduce the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and advocate for human rights and democracy globally.

Albright’s sad news comes as NATO leaders, including US President Joe Biden, prepare to meet in Brussels, Belgium, about Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine.
