China accelerates construction of power storage stations

The first 100 megawatt-scale power storage station of China was just inaugurated and put into use in Jinan city, Shandong province, in December 2021. It can generate 100 kWh per charge, enough to power 1,000 homes for a month.

“At the moment, this power station can absorb excess electricity throughout Shandong province, is designed to charge and discharge electricity twice a day, and then supply electricity back to users depending on the actual situation of the power grid,” said Wen Ziquiang, an electrical engineer.

The construction of power storage stations has been accelerated since 2021 when China fell into a prolonged power shortage, causing many first-class urban cities such as Beijing and Shanghai to also experience rotating power cuts and many factories. temporarily closed.

The power storage stations function as a reservoir to help regulate the electricity market and ensure energy security for China.

“The capacity of charging stations in China is only 2% of the total capacity, while our goal is to raise this ratio to 10-15% by 2050. There is still a huge gap between actual capacity with market demand,” said Chen Haisheng, director of the China Special Commission on Power Storage.

In the context that fossil energy forms such as crude oil and gas are fluctuating wildly and the share of renewable electricity including solar and wind is increasing, through the construction of huge power storage stations, China is making efforts to enhance the stability of the national energy market, avoiding supply shocks.
