The moment the police lieutenant saved the lives of 4 drowning people in Vung Tau beach: ”The joy is not complete because we can’t save everyone”

While swimming with his family in Vung Tau, Lieutenant Thai Ngo Hieu heard the cry for help and immediately swam towards the group of people hugging and struggling in the sea.

The victims were a group of young men and women, holding each other in the midst of strong waves. They are being swept out to sea at about 8:30 am, April 10 morning in Phuoc Tinh commune, Long Dien district, Ba Ria – Vung Tau province.

Talking to Dan Tri, Lieutenant Hieu, 33 years old, said that at the time of the accident, the swimming area was only with the group of victims and his family there. Artificial rocky shore – the area where the victims swim is about 40m long, more than 30m from the shore. The inside of the rocky shore had no waves, at first the victims gathered there, then they encountered unusually large waves, so they clung to each other, swept away by the waves.

But without time to rest, Mr. Hieu returned immediately. Fortunately, just swimming to the place, local people were present and saved 2 more people in trouble. The last person was then pulled to safety by Mr. Hieu.

“Before that, I had been swimming for a long time, my body was tired, so people were afraid that I wouldn’t be able to save the victims, sometimes affecting their lives. But at that time I didn’t think much of it, just thought how to save it. I’m a lifeguard, my conscience won’t allow me to stop,” said Lieutenant Thai Ngo Hieu.

Unlike her friends, Ms. Van Anh (33 years old, Mr. Hieu’s wife) did not stop her husband but encouraged and empowered him to swim back to the sea for the second time to save lives.

After about 10 minutes, Hieu brought 4 people to shore safely. However, there are victims with cyanosis, some lying motionless, signs of apnea, cardiac arrest. Lt. The most critical person regained consciousness after about 2 minutes of timely emergency and was taken to the hospital soon after. The incident was recorded by a friend in Hieu’s group and shared on social networks, attracting many people’s attention.

Lieutenant Hieu said, this is not the first time he has saved people. Working at the Fire and Rescue Team in Trang Bom area, Dong Nai province, he and his teammates have performed hundreds of times to save lives. Last year, he was voted as a typical individual in the work of Fire Prevention and Rescue.

After saving a group of friends, Ngo Hieu knew that there was still one more person who was swept away by the waves. Immediately, he coordinated with the local rescue team to search. About 30 minutes later, people reported finding the victim’s body drifting about 500m away from the crash site.

“I’m sorry, the joy is not complete because I couldn’t save everyone,” said the Fire Police Lieutenant.
