Ukrainian President Zelensky works in the dark for fear of bombings

Reporter Scott Pelley’s CBS Zelensky was interviewed in the command center in Kiev on April 6. The show aired on the evening of April 10.

Reporter CBS describes the command center as a “fortress” full of soldiers and weapons. Video taken at the center shows the unlit walkway and the cushions placed on the floor. Pelley said that some Ukrainian soldiers slept on it.

“It must be dark here. You can’t turn on the lights because bombs might fall here, when there’s an air strike.” CBS translate Mr. Zelensky’s words.

CBS said that Mr. Zelensky and his aides had lived in the center for 46 days as of April 10. Asked if he was safe, President Zelensky replied: “Yes, I am fine. Now I feel pretty calm. Our guards are worried about possible air strikes. But when we heard the evacuation siren, we immediately ran down the stairs,” he said.

When asked how it feels to have to work in conditions like this, Mr. Zelensky replied in English: “We have to find a way to work. We have no other choice.”

Western intelligence estimates that Russia was initially expected to take control of Ukraine just days after launching the military operation. However, the conflict lasted for more than a month, and Ukrainian troops regained control of some areas.

Russia has withdrawn its troops from Kiev, but Zelensky and Ukrainian officials expect Moscow to return to the capital. Shelling still occurs in this area.

Zelensky chose to stay in Ukraine to lead the war, after turning down Western invitations to evacuate.
