Russia will equip Sarmat missiles capable of carrying hypersonic weapons

Commander of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces Sergey Karakayev announced on April 24, intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Russia’s new RS-28 Sarmat can carry several Avangard hypersonic warheads designed to penetrate any system missile defense system which is available.

Last week, the RS-28 Sarmat ballistic missile passed the first of a series of final tests in the Russian military’s reception process.

“The development of Avangard heralds a new era: the era of hypersonic weapons,” Karakayev told Rossiya 1: Mr. Karakayev also added that Sarmat can make this weapon even more effective.

The Sarmat missile, weighing 200 tons, is the fifth generation of a heavy intercontinental ballistic missile. This missile can overcome all modern missile defense systems.

The Russian Defense Ministry last week announced the successful test launch of the Sarmat missile. Russian President Vladimir Putin witnessed the test launch and congratulated him. Putin stressed that all components used on the missile were developed by Russia.

“The Sarmat is much more powerful than the current Avangard integrated missile,” explained Karakayev. The Sarmat ballistic missile is specially designed to carry the Avangard warhead. Therefore, the new missile is capable of carrying more warheads than the ICBM UR-100UTTKh which is being used by the Russian Strategic Missile Forces.

It is not yet clear how many hypersonic warheads the Sarmat can be equipped with. The UR-100UTTKh missile can carry up to six guided warheads (MIRV), but this number has not been confirmed for the Avangard warhead. Mr. Karakayev also did not provide any further details on the matter.

According to the CEO of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) Dmitry Rogozin, Russia’s Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) is much more powerful than the US Minuteman-III super rocket.

The director of Roscosmos revealed that superior technical data has made this missile invulnerable to current and future US and NATO missile defense systems. “This is a huge success for our designers and engineers,” he said. We are very proud of that.”
