Colombia extradites drug lord “Otoniel” to the US

President Duque wrote on Twitter: “I would like to announce that Dairo Antonio Usuga, alias'”Otoniel“was extradited”, at the same time Mr. Duque called this “the guy drug dealing most dangerous in the world”.

Usuga, 50, was the most wanted person in Colombia until his arrest in October 2021 in the northwest of the country after a large-scale military operation.

Mr. Duque described Usuga as “a murderer who assassinates social leaders and policemen, who abuses boys, girls and teenagers”.

“Today, the rule of law, the rule of law, security forces and justice have prevailed,” he added.

On the afternoon of May 4 (local time), a convoy of five bulletproof police cars transported Usuga from a prison in the capital Bogota to a military airport, where he was handed over to officials. Drug Enforcement Administration, a federal law enforcement agency under the US Department of Justice.

Photos shared by local media showed Usuga in handcuffs sitting on the plane with Colombian police and an Interpol official.

Usuga is the leader of Colombia’s largest drug cartel, the “Gulf Clan”.

Subject was arrested near the border with Panama after a military operation involving 500 soldiers with the support of 22 helicopters. During this operation, one policeman was killed.

Usuga’s arrest is one of the biggest blows to Colombia’s drug trade since the assassination of drug lord Pablo Escobar in 1993.

Usuga was prosecuted in 2009 in the US. The US has announced a reward of $ 5 million for anyone for information leading to the arrest of this name.

The US accused Usuga and the “Gulf Clan” drug cartel of illegally bringing at least 73 tons of cocaine into the country between 2003 and 2012.

After Usuga and 90 other suspected gang members were arrested, President Duque announced, this was the end of the “Gulf Clan drug clan”.

Four Colombian soldiers were killed in gang attacks just days after Usuga was captured.

The “Gulf Clan” is said to be responsible for 30% of the cocaine that comes from Colombia, the world’s largest producer and supplier of the drug.

Since his arrest, Usuga has been held in a high-security prison in Bogota, and this arrest has been at the center of many controversies.
