On May 5, fishermen in Cambodia suddenly discovered a stingray weighing nearly 200kg. This giant fish was pulled up from the Mekong River after swallowing another fish caught in the trap of these fishermen.

This giant stingray was identified as a giant freshwater stingray (Urogymnus polylepis), which was accidentally discovered by people in Stung Treng province, northeastern Cambodia. Almost immediately, the group of fishermen informed members of the Wonders of the Mekong project – a conservation group run by the University of Nevada Reno (URN) that combines animal size measurement and untethering. fishing, release it safely back to the river.

This animal weighs about 180kg, 1.9 meters wide, 4 meters long including the tail and has venomous teeth 15cm long. Previous reports suggest that this species can grow even larger than that. Earlier in 2005, a giant freshwater stingray was caught in Thailand, estimated to weigh between 249 and 349 kg.
