Russia claims to use laser weapons ‘troublemakers’ in Ukraine
According to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov, the country’s new laser weapon system can shoot down enemy targets at a distance of 5km.
“Russia has developed its own anti-drone laser weapons and used them in the military operation in Ukraine. This weapon has a range of 5km and is nicknamed Zadira, which means ‘troublemaker’ in Russian,” RT news agency quoted Borisov as saying in an interview conducted on May 18.

Borisov in the interview also pointed out the difference between Zadira and some previous generation laser weapons
“The Peresvet system, a laser weapon announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2018, is designed to disable the optical sensor systems of enemy spy satellites at a distance of 1,500km. While Peresvet ‘blinds’ electronics, the new generation of laser weapons will cause damage to the target by burning them,” Borisov added.
“Zadira is capable of shooting down many different types of UAVs, thereby reducing costs when there is no need to use air defense systems such as Pantsir-S1 or Tor,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.
