Previously, on May 12, Can Tho leaders suggested that the Can Tho – Ho Chi Minh City railway should be started before 2030, to transport goods for the Mekong Delta; connecting with Ho Chi Minh City and other areas.

According to the representative of the consulting consortium preparing the pre-feasibility report, the project has the starting point at An Binh station (Di An city, Binh Duong province), the end point at Cai Rang station, Can Tho city. The route is more than 174 km long, with a total investment of about 7 billion USD, passing through 6 localities including Binh Duong province, Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Tien Giang, Vinh Long and Can Tho city with 13 stations.

This is a double track, using a standard gauge of 1,435 mm, with a design speed of about 190 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains. With the above speed, the travel time from Can Tho to Ho Chi Minh City takes 75-80 minutes instead of 180-240 minutes by road as now.
