Exploding love at the office

AmericaSocial relations were narrowed because of the pandemic, office workers became closer to each other. They suddenly find their colleagues more attractive than before.

In January 2021, De La Cruz, 23, a clerical worker at a warehouse in California, USA, was able to remove his mask at work after receiving the Covid-19 vaccine. This is also the first time Morfin, 20, has seen his colleague’s bright smile and dimpled cheeks. “He’s so easygoing and it seems I’ve been struck by lightning,” says Morfin, of Perris.

A few months later, De La Cruz took on the task of helping Morfin take over the job, as he prepared to move to a new position. They became close and their feelings gradually deepened. “I never thought I would date a colleague. But everything between us is progressing very well. The two have no difficulties despite working together,” the girl shared.

The two officially started dating in August last year and moved in together earlier this year. Being both a colleague and a lover is not as bad as they think.

Research published in February by the American Association for Human Resource Management, found that 33% of American workers have or are dating a co-worker. Before the pandemic, the rate was 27%. Notably, 35% of “white-collar workers” said that returning to the office helped them improve their emotional life.

“People have experienced loneliness during the lockdown. They can feel the connection with their colleagues on a deeper level when communicating via Zoom or other technology applications.” Laura Young, relationship expert, says.

And when they return to the office, people have more opportunities to get to know each other and get further with their co-workers because of the sense of belonging that has been built up in the process of working remotely.

According to attorney Kevin Mintzer, in Manhattan, as long as there is not a big disparity in position, power, love in the workplace is fine. “There’s nothing wrong with dating someone at work, as long as company policy doesn’t restrict it and both parties are equal and voluntary,” Kevin Mintzer said.

But Allen White and Dawn Little still want to keep their love affairs private at work. The couple met and flirted at a Christmas party at the office in December 2019. They eat lunch together, drink coffee in the afternoon, kiss in the elevator, as long as they don’t let their colleagues find out.

The period of social distancing in 2020 is challenging the budding love of both. “We can’t see each other, we can only keep in touch via FaceTime and Zoom,” said White, 23, of Leeds, England. But at the end of 2020, when Covid-19 was fine, both decided to publicize their love story with their colleagues.

They try to separate their work and their emotions. At the company, the two are still good friends and colleagues. When they get out of the office, they’re like any other couple. “The pandemic seems to make people more open to office romances,” White said.
